Presentation Summary-Thomas Herron
It seems as if child abuse information is out there and people have learned about the statistics and how to identify a child in danger, yet the rates of child abuse across the nation have stayed consistent over the past few years. My goal with this presentation was to not only give information relating to child abuse but to also encourage society as a whole to speak up when they see wrong doing to a child.
Children are our future and it is shown that many secondary mental illnesses are developed as a result of child abuse; such as schizophrenia and multiple personality disorders. Disease of this caliber make it difficult to function in society and decreases their quality of life.
It is our responsibility to limit the number of child abuse cases and help these vulnerable children. One way is through social work. My presentation about social work discusses a new implementation of Critical Care Social Work that moves away from the “rough around the edges” stigma that some feel it portrays.
This new type of social work eliminates the power gap between the parties involved in order to make the family feel less inferior and more apart of the social work process. In doing so, this will lead to a better outcome for the client and in doing so a better quality of life.
